I got my start as a journalist with an incurable case of wanderlust and enough college debt to keep me from ending up a beach bum in Hawaii. A passion for the outdoors guided my writing. My goal at the time was to have fun, make a small difference in the world and hopefully make enough money to live off of.
I wish I could say that was the end of the story, but outdoor writing didn’t pay the bills during the Great Recession, so I spent a few years paying my dues as an editor of a real estate trade magazine. I used my lunch breaks and late nights to do the type of writing I loved.
I later set out on my own as a full-time freelance writer and spent a couple of years enjoying the hustle of working for myself (and hot having to wear pants to the office). After a while, though, the continuing decline of the journalism industry sent me looking for greener pastures.
The agency world came calling, I was surprised to find the same storytelling that drew me to journalism was still alive and well. Copywriting and content marketing have provided a gateway into content strategy and have shown me how it’s more important than ever to tell good stories that matter to your audience.
